    I know, I know. No one wants to hear about “the good old days” and how they were better than whatever is going on now. We’re all supposed to be moving forward, making more of the time we do live in. But to my surprise, I’ve been noticing that more and more younger-than-I-am Gen Z people are nostalgic for a time period they never got to live in (that yearning is called anemoia): the 1980s. And that’s my time.

    Recently, out of the blue, I received an email from a young woman in Ireland who had read one of my pieces about how I deal with hearing loss and the shame of it, and finally found pride and happiness in finding solutions. Her pain and terror were palpable on the page. She was terrified to get her hearing checked, even though she couldn’t hear people at work, and she had to mumble or nod as if she did.

    Hi, my name is Caroline, and I am ashamed. I admit it. I’m ashamed to even write this piece about being ashamed. And because my overriding inclination is to apologize to you all, I’m going to try, instead, to confront. Because to me, the only emotion worse than shame is fear.
