The U.S. Federal Reserve has kicked off its easing cycle with a bigger-than-expected 50 basis point interest rate cut, but don’t expect that to prompt an earlier policy shift from the Reserve Bank. The Fed move makes the RBA an outlier among global central banks in not having begun to cut rates, with the European Central Bank, Bank of England, Bank of Canada and the RBNZ all having eased in recent months.

At their Rocklea operation, old cars, appliances and construction materials are piled in a tower five stories high, while an electric crane (one of only two in Australia) picks up the materials and feeds them into a giant shredder that spits out chunks of metal ready to be put in shipping containers and sent to Southeast Asia. From there the metal will be reprocessed and made into new products by companies such as BlueScope Steel.

There’s a blue tree in the grounds of Denison Park, home of the Bowen Seagulls rugby league club, that signals to young players that they’re entering a safe space. The north Queensland-based Seagulls have been named community club of the year in the NRL’s annual community awards, which are presented by Westpac.
