Remember being 19 and getting frozen in a CVS shampoo aisle not knowing what in the name of Garnier to throw into your cart? Eventually, you were so flustered, you’d wind up walking away with some sad combo of lemon verbena wash and coco-vanilla conditioner that had you smelling like the entrance of a Yankee Candle store. Well, that’s been me, facing every, single beauty decision in all my 40 years of life. There were just too many products. Too many promises.

Disclaimers are an incredibly dull way to start us off. But here’s a big one:This is NOT an article about it being bad or undesirable or a “problem” to be any shape or ANY size. Ok, I feel a little better. You? This IS,however, an article about looking and feeling good in the clothes that we all need and wear and have a right to enjoy living our lives in. More specifically, our dresses. I happen to feel my best in dresses that don’t cling to my belly.

This is NOT an article about body size. Our size should really never be the focus when it comes to clothes. What does actually matter is shape. Size only tells us IF clothes will fit us whereas shape tells us HOW clothes will fit us. I’ve been all over the map in terms of “size,” but in shape, I’ve always been the same. I carry most of my weight north of my hips, and no matter what number might appear on a scale I don’t own, I am never without, a belly pooch.

The soft slouchy shape almost curves along my side, which makes it feel like I’m not carrying anything at all. My personal dream. Also, it gives me a bit of a waist when I wear slouchy things, which is pretty nice. The body is made of a soft buttery leather, but it doesn’t feel at all flimsy or like you’re gonna knick it the second you toss it into your passenger seat.

I recently realized there’s a small section of my closet collecting dust. Wanna guess what’s in it? It’s not tattered Aerie bras from my 20s or some on-sale jumpsuit I tossed into my cart at Target. It’s the things that I took the plunge and spent cold hard cash on. I never even touch them, but they cost too much to give away. So they just stay there, making me sad. However … they’ve led me to a revelation - about splurging on clothes in general. It won’t knock you out of your chair, but here it is.

And it’s for good reason. Barbie’s swimsuits always looked like they were made for real adult women of non-39-18-33 proportions. Maybe because Barbie herself originated in the in the hourglass-obsessed 50s, her suits were flawlessly designed to look good on curves. And they’ve stayed that way. Take a skim through the decades of full coverage bottoms, supportive-seeming tops (not that Barbie needed that feature), pretty prints and colors, and chic, endlessly flattering cuts.

We all have those moments when we wish we could rewind over our rant or fast forward through our spouse’s three-hour silent treatment. Most of us have spent an entire day having off interactions with our partner followed by a night doom scrolling our brain over what it could mean. And every so often we stop to wonder, how much of this normal? Or even okay? It would be nice to get a hard answer – like a number.
