Here's how you can help recognize outstanding LGBTQ+ and ally leaders in Greater Washington's business community. Nominations are currently open for our 2025 LGBTQ+ Business Awards. Last year, we honored 10 individuals and five company employee resource groups for their outstanding leadership in advancing LGBTQ+ rights and equality in Greater Washington. We plan to do the same thing this year.

New players, new spaces and growing demand suggest the industry has found its footing. While some coworking companies suffered greatly from the pandemic or their own business decisions — filing for bankruptcy, selling off locations or even closing for good — Greater Washington is still one of the best spots in the country for the industry. According to a 2024 study by CoworkingMag, D.C. ranks third in the U.S. for its coworking space density, with 1.28 spaces per square mile.

Fatima Popal’s love of numbers began in her childhood. Seeing her natural affinity for math, her father Zubair Popal put her to work, teaching her to balance the family checkbook. And in a way, she still does — but for the whole family business, overseeing The Popal Group’s payroll, finances, events and human resources. The family-owned D.C. hospitality company, founded in 2003, has four concepts: restaurants Lapis, Lutèce and Pascual, and Lapop, an art incubator space and cocktail bar.
