Sophie Willis, investigations editor at The Pharmaceutical Journal, has been recognised as ‘Newcomer of the Year’ at the 2025 Avicenna Media Awards, held at Barber-Surgeon’s Hall in London on 31 January 2025. The judges were impressed with Willis’s “ability to grasp the complexities of the pharmacy sector” at such an early stage in her career as a pharmacy writer, while taking “a different investigative approach to looking into the matters affecting the industry”.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has recommended olaparib (Lynparza; AstraZeneca) for treatment of HER2-negative locally advanced or metastatic breast cancer in adults with BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene mutations who have had chemotherapy. In the final draft guidance, published on 9 January 2025, NICE said around 1,200 people could benefit from the treatment, after reaching a commercial arrangement with manufacturer AztraZeneca.

Since August 2024, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has published two draft guidance papers relating to new monoclonal antibody treatments for Alzheimer’s disease (AD) – lecanemab (Leqembi; Eisai) and donanemab (Kisunla; Eli Lilly). While treatments currently offered to people with AD are aimed at managing symptoms, both lecanemab and donanemab are seen as cutting edge for their ability to target the root cause of the disease and slow progression.

It is clear that Emeka Onwudiwe, president of the British Pharmaceutical Students’ Association (BPSA), is passionate about making sure pharmacy students find confidence as they progress through the MPharm programme to become fully qualified pharmacists. Having joined the BPSA in 2022 as its eastern area coordinator, he later took on the role of treasurer, before being elected president for the 2024/2025 year.

The General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) is currently reviewing 40 active fitness-to-practise (FtP) cases linked to online pharmacy activities, the regulator’s chief pharmacy officer has confirmed. Speaking at The Pharmacy Show in Birmingham on 13 October 2024, Roz Gittins said the GPhC has had “over 400 FtP cases linked in some way to online activities” to date, which includes “about 40 cases that are currently active”.
