Back in 2016, I took my recorder and mic to a parking lot outside of a grocery store in Las Vegas. I was gathering answers to a question NPR was posing to listeners - and asking member stations to record. The question was about anxiety in the voting public. Talk about an understatement. I talked to a man, Nicholas, from Iran who was an engineer. He came to this country at the age of 15 during the revolution. Which means, when I was talking to him in 2016, he was in his 50s.

I’m terrified by America’s fascism trend and disgusted that my party is now a Trump cult. My time inside the system and in the probe of the January 6 attack has left me with just an ember of hope. This past Thursday, A.G. Suzlberger wrote a 4,100-word opinion piece for the Washington Post. I did a double take when I saw the byline, because I was certain I had opened the WaPo app, not the app for the New York Times, which Sulzberger publishes.* But the headline was, in fact, in small cap sentence form (as opposed to the first letter in every word capped in Times headlines). And the WaPo logo was on the top of my screen.

“My place is of the sun and this place is of the dark,” wrote Emily Saliers in “Prince of Darkness,” the fourth song on the Indigo Girls’ 1989 self-titled album. The duo - whose song “Closer to Fine” from the same album was the centerpiece of last year’s blockbuster “Barbie” movie - were singing about bad romance, but also the desperate choices that life gives us.
