More Lafourche Parish middle schools students will have the chance to represent their schools and communities in a competitive setting in the 2025-2026 school year. The Lafourche Parish School District announced this week that they are launching an Esports League for its middle schools in the next school year with competition set to begin in the fall semester.

For most sports, the season comes, the season goes and then a lengthy period of time passes before you do it all over again. But high school baseball is different. In that sport, once the varsity season ends, teams have to get right back up on the horse and get back to work over the summer. Local baseball teams will all be competing in summer seasons throughout the month of June with most in the Swampland league, but others getting work in other leagues around the state.

The red snapper season is under way in local waters. And officials with the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries say that there are early signs that the season will be plentiful for anglers. The LDWF released Red Snapper landings last week for the opening week of the season. Those estimates show that 60,054 pounds or 6.7% of Louisiana’s annual private recreational allocation of 894,955 pounds were harvested during the opening week of the season during early May.

I’ll never forget that smell, nor the sound, for that matter. For me, it’s the sound and smell of summer. As I laid on the floor of my Maw-Myriel’s room wrapped in a blanket and curled on my side, it was that sizzling sound that let me know it was no longer nighttime, but that morning was now here. The sound was the sizzle of fresh dough being fried by my grandpa, Leroy Doucet in the family’s kitchen.

That is nothing new. But what is quite a bit unique and interesting is the work that a group of local students did this year to take their passion for playing with the popular toy to the next level. Third grade students in Mrs. Jill Arabie’s class at Holy Rosary school created ‘Everyone’s Dream,’ this past school year, a literal slime company where the children made their own slime product, marketed it for sale and then donated proceeds to St. Jude’s to help fight childhood cancer.
