In 2006, academic and activist Dennis Altman remembered the heady days when anxiety about Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) pervaded the Australian psyche:Altman astutely captured the nascent feelings of social and political change in Australia, while an unprecedented epidemic raged globally in the 1980s. The first Australian diagnosis of AIDS—and what we now recognise as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection—occurred in 1982 in Darlinghurst, Sydney.
