The final time Sedona Prince exited a game in her seven-year collegiate career, she was met with cheers as she walked past the scorer’s table and down the bench. It wasn’t a swan song in the way many seniors are pulled early for a career-ending ovation of appreciation. The 6-foot-7 center fouled out with six minutes to play in TCU’s Elite Eight loss to Texas at Legacy Arena in Birmingham, Alabama, last month.

NEW YORK — Paige Bueckers is running on great — and grateful — fumes. After winning an elusive NCAA title in Tampa, Florida, eight days ago, she’s lived most of the first week as a reigning national champion going back and forth between Storrs, Connecticut, and New York in the seven-day limbo between collegiate standout and WNBA superstar. A day ago, she paraded around Hartford, where the school plays some of its games, to celebrate the program’s 12th national championship.

The name Paige Bueckers and qualifier “projected No. 1 pick” have been synonymous since she committed to Connecticut in 2019 as the top high school recruit in America. Though the full journey took unexpected turns, including an extra season in college, it has led to the same junction. The Dallas Wings are expected to select Bueckers as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 WNBA Draft on Monday (7:30 p.m. ET, ESPN) at The Shed at Hudson Yards in New York.

There is no denying winning is in Hailey Van Lith’s DNA. It’s not simply that she reached an NCAA Elite Eight every season of her five-year collegiate career. It’s that she did it with three different programs in differing roles each time. “I’m very willing and open to adapting and that’s necessary for the next level,” Van Lith said after the Sweet 16 round in the Birmingham 3 regional.

TAMPA, Fla. — It took a full minute of game action for Paige Bueckers to make her way down the Connecticut bench. First, she embraced head coach Geno Auriemma near the scorer’s table as play continued behind her. She carried on down through coaches and teammates and personnel, attempting to encapsulate entire relationships into five-second hugs. The family and friends stood rows deep behind them, as they had for most of the second half.
