The heat has been non-stop all summer and no relief is coming soon! Heat alerts are in place from the Gulf Coast to the Upper Midwest (above). A ridge of high pressure is expanding to the north and east, coming out of the Four Corners, and bringing the extreme heat with it. Heat alerts in the Plains continue through THURSDAY. Friday was another day of record setting highs in Texas. Wichita Falls reached 111°, beating out the old record.

As torrential rain from Hilary moves into the Desert Southwest, some National Parks are closing due an extreme flood risk. The Weather Prediction Center has issued a rare HIGH risk in their excessive rainfall outlook on Sunday for parts of Southern California. This is the first time a HIGH risk has been issued for this part of the country and means that there is a 70% chance of flash flooding in these areas.

17 Aug 2023 1:30 PMA cold front moving through the Great Lakes will bring a chance for strong storms to the region today. The Storm Prediction Center has highlighted a MARGINAL risk (low-end threat) for damaging winds and up to quarter-size hail for the areas shaded in dark green (above). While damaging winds and hail will be the main threats, isolated tornadoes are also possible from Allentown and Scranton to Harrisburg.
