Hello again, nagging sense of what might have been. A three-point margin of victory for Mayo on Sunday last was probably a smaller margin than many predicted in the lead up to Sligo’s visit to Castlebar but, as things transpired, at least through black and white glasses, it could have been so much better.

The battle for eyeballs is significant in the modern sporting landscape, but the GAA had as close as you’ll get to a clear run at it last weekend. The Irish women’s rugby team kicked off their Six Nations campaign at 1pm on Saturday – so that game was finished by 3 o’clock – and the Republic of Ireland men’s football team played their Nations League play-off second leg on Sunday evening. Both of those games took place outside of the throw-in times for the bulk of the weekend’s GAA action.

In sport, lots of characteristics are required in order to excel. You need to be talented, determined, committed and have a belief that you can do well. And in order to achieve, at various stages you may also need a healthy dollop of delusion to keep going when everyone else tells you it’d be smarter, and save you a lot of hassle, to stop altogether. As supporters, we also need some delusion to believe that our team can do well, even when all the odds are stacked against that actually happening.

With the men’s Six Nations now out of the way, the full sporting limelight will be afforded to the Republic of Ireland football team this week as they attempt to successfully navigate a Nations League play-off with Bulgaria. John Delaney certainly had his detractions as CEO of the FAI, but he was correct when he said the Irish football team was the biggest show in town.

The LGFA held its annual Congress in Letterkenny in County Donegal last weekend, with local man Micheál Naughton – a native of Castleconnor – handing over the Presidential medal to his successor Trina Murray, who played for 13 years with Westmeath at inter-county level. Murray is the 14th President of the LGFA and it is quite possible she could be the last as integration looms on the horizon.
