AbstractCells are equipped with intracellular RIG-like Receptors (RLRs) detecting double stranded (ds)RNA, a molecule with Pathogen-Associated Molecular Pattern (PAMPs) generated during the life cycle of many viruses. Melanoma Differentiation-Associated protein 5 (MDA5), a helicase enzyme member of the RLRs encoded by the ifih1 gene, binds to long dsRNA molecules during a viral infection and initiates production of type I interferon (IFN1) which orchestrates the antiviral response.

INTRODUCTION Conservation of insects in urban environments is a key global challenge (Luke et al., 2023). The continued expansion of urban areas across the globe (Angel et al., 2011) has raised concerns about how this impacts biodiversity and the field of urban ecology has grown rapidly in recent decades (Niemelä et al., 2011). To date, urban animal studies have, however, largely focused on birds and mammals predominantly in the cities of North America and Europe (Collins et al., 2021).
