The uptake of the first dose of the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR1) vaccine by two years of age in the first quarter of 2023 was as low as 80pc in some regions. In 1990, following two years of modelling research, I estimated that 96pc of all children here should be vaccinated at as early an age as possible to eradicate the disease and stop more serious infections. Given these early warning signs, it was sad to hear last month of the unnecessary death of an adult in Ireland from measles.
