    More than one in five children are living in poverty in 10 out of the 11 local council areas in the North, new research has revealed. Derry City and Strabane District Council ranks third behind Belfast (27.8%) and Newry, Mourne and Down (25.8%), with 25.3% of children here living in poverty. Lisburn and Castlereagh ranked lowest at 19.4%. In terms of Westminster constituencies, 20% of children across the North are living in poverty in 16 out of the 18 constituencies.

    Dr Sameh Hassan, the chairman of the North West Islamic Association (NWIA), has expressed his thanks to everyone who contributed to its Ramadan fundraiser in aid of the Foyle Foodbank - Foyle Network Foundation. The Association recently presented a cheque for £3,500 to the Foyle Foodbank, bringing the total it has raised for the organisation since 2017, when the Ramadan fundraiser began, to an incredible £14,350.

    The hardy members of the Derry branch of the Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign (DIPSC) and supporters have held a ‘Camp 4 Gaza’ at Free Derry Corner in the city. The camp took place from Saturday, May 31 at 1.00pm, through the night, into the afternoon of Sunday, June 1. Welcoming members of the community to the ‘Camp 4 Gaza’, Catherine Hutton, chairperson of Derry IPSC said the event was to show solidarity with the people of Gaza in the face of the ongoing genocide.
