Engineering services firm Ayesa has been appointed as lead consultant to progress the tendering and detailed design and construction of the €57M (£49M) Arklow Flood Relief Scheme in County Wicklow, Ireland. The project aims to mitigate recurring flooding challenges in Arklow, a town with a population of almost 14,000. It involves constructing flood defences and embankments and improvements to the Avoca River.

Strabag's HS2 tunnel segments delivered from Hartlepool to London via rail

HS2's precast tunnel segments are being transported via railway from Hartlepool to London for use in the 5.4km Northolt Tunnel East. The pre-cast concrete segments are being delivered by rail to minimise road traffic and reduce carbon emissions. Strabag, the company manufacturing the segments for HS2’s next London tunnel drives, opened a new state-of-the-art factory in Hartlepool earlier this year.
3D-printed concrete masonry bridge made of recycled materials revealed

A first-of-its-kind 3D-printed concrete masonry bridge has been created by building solutions company Holcim. The bridge, which is named Phoenix, is built with 10t of recycled materials and was unveiled at Holcim's Innovation Hub in Europe. It was built by a partnership of the Block Research Group at ETH Zurich, Zaha Hadid Architects Computation and Design Group and incremental3D.

Laing O’Rourke is set to deliver the first stage of the Eastern Freeway Upgrades in Victoria, Australia. The contract with the Victorian government will see Laing O’Rourke deliver upgrades to the Eastern Freeway between Burke Road and Tram Road as part of an alliance with Major Road Projects Victoria, Symal, Arcadis and WSP. It closes the roof on the first reactor building, allowing the first nuclear reactor at the Somerset power station to be installed next year. Innovations to accelerate track laying, rail welding and automate cable installation are among technologies aiming to be deployed during delivery of HS2. Four technologies and the companies behind them have been selected as part of a government rail innovation competition. The winners are Mirage, Mobibiz, I3D Robotics and Geokod Rail. The Department for Transport initiative, First of a Kind, aims to improve cost efficiency and increase value for money in the railway sector.
National Highways to construct additional emergency refuge areas on 11 smart motorways

National Highways is set to upgrade 11 more sections of smart motorway with extra places to stop in an emergency. Earlier this year, the government cancelled plans for any new smart motorways, due to cost pressures and the lack of driver confidence. A further 11 locations have now been announced for additional emergency refuge areas on existing and under-construction smart motorways. They include sections of the M1, M3, M4, M5, M6, M20, M25 and M27.
