Earlier this month, on a long drive home, I listened to NPR’s “Fresh Air” after I got tired of the noise of the radio. Every so often I think about things in my world that don’t make sense. Of course I start making lists, because I know that at some point I’ll want to write about them. This is often triggered by something on the radio. For example, the probably popular ad from a local bank. Where I used to bank. Well, that’s another story. But I’m currently being cajoled back because some teen-aged basketball superstar banks there. He provides several reasons why this bank is the best choice.

Tomorrow is Epiphany, perhaps better known as Twelfth Night or Three King’s Day. The traditional date commemorating the visit of the Wise Men to the Christ Child. A traditional date to end the Christmas season. If you were going to take your tree down then, you either did or you missed it. Another date, though, is the Feast of the Baptism, set on January 13, in 1962.

Years ago, it was standard: No Christmas until after Thanksgiving. Some traditions, like parades, still adhere to this standard. Others, like starting to decorate right after Halloween or playing seasonal music, have emerged. My Lexington radio station began playing their music the first weekend in November. I could, of course, find another station for a few weeks, but I looked forward to this. Reacted happily when I heard the first song. That eventually led to thinking about the songs.
