A portrait of the anti-slavery campaigner William Wilberforce hangs in pride of place in Markington Hall, his ancestral home that is now home to his great great great grandson also named William who is now an ambassador for the trust that holds his family’s name. Not only is there the portrait painted the portrait, the family still has a cameo containing a lock of his hair and an iron tobacco box made from a slave’s manacles given to him in thanks.

But thanks to the work of Leeds City Council’s communication team some of those black and white pictures can now be seen in colour for the first time, bringing history alive. And this is no AI programme, they have all been painstakingly colourised by hand, ready for a special Civic Reception on May 10 where Leeds’s last surviving World War II veteran Jack Moritimer will be honoured.
