    We are overrun with words. They pester us incessantly, demanding our attention, orally and in writing; digitally and in print; through books, magazines and newspapers; on Facebook, Twitter (X) and TikTok. Many are fast food for the mind, no less ephemeral, disposable and ubiquitous than are paper wrappers in what Pope Francis calls our "throwaway culture." But some are meant to be treasured. English and Latin have only one common word for "word," but ancient Greek has multiple.

    According to our Constitution, Congress makes the law, the president enforces the law, and judges interpret the law. But in the United States today, administrative agencies run the law. Legal scholar Susan Dudley has done the calculations: she points out that the Code of Federal Regulations, largely drafted by these agencies, consumes more than 185,000 pages. The regulations are more than four times as long as the U.S. legal code upon which they are based.

    Reflecting on the Real PresenceI found John Cavadini’s short take, “The Eucharist & the Poor” (November 2023), meaningful on several levels. I’ve been a subscriber for a number of years but have only recently become a self-exiled Roman Catholic who is presently worshipping and communing with an Episcopal congregation in town, for various reasons of conscience.
