"It makes me feel like people value us," he said. Schwickert was one of 83 graduating seniors from Fredericksburg and the counties of Caroline, Culpeper, King George, Orange, Spotsylvania and Stafford recognized Wednesday at the Fredericksburg Convention Center for their decision to enlist in the military.

The Stafford Board of Supervisors last month advertised a potential 5-cent increase in its real estate tax rate, then held a last-minute work session on Tuesday to try to avoid it. In the end, which came in the early morning hours of Wednesday, Stafford officials approved a 3-cent increase. For fiscal year 2026, which starts July 1, the real estate tax rate will rise to $0.9236 per $100 of assessed value, compared to the current rate of $0.8936 per $100 of value.
