At the end of the 19th century, Merida in Mexico was said to be home to more millionaires than anywhere else in the world, thanks to the henequen industry. Known as the "green gold of the Yucatan", the leaf fibre of henequen (an agave) was used to make rope and twine on grand haciendas (estates).
