CHARLOTTESVILLE — It was early when James Madison took a 2-1 lead. It was close, but it was competitive and the Dukes seemed to have a quick edge. As the minutes ticked by, Duke found its footing. One goal turned into two and suddenly the Blue Devils were on a six-goal run all before the first quarter came to a close. The momentum was sitting firmly with Duke, and JMU couldn’t find a way to string its own runs together, falling 17-10 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

A three-run bottom of the sixth seemed promising. James Madison’s bats were slowly starting to come alive, and the Dukes had runs to prove it after falling behind 2-0 early against Maryland. After plating three in the sixth, the top of the seventh swung in favor of the Terps, and the momentum never returned to the Dukes. JMU only managed to tie it at 4-4 following a solo shot from third baseman Wyatt Peifer before falling 6-4 in extra innings.
