We conducted a prospective observational study of patients undergoing lung lobectomy at the Minneapolis VA Medical Center (MVAMC) for suspected or confirmed lung cancer. To decrease the influence of medications on our findings, we excluded subjects who had used antibiotics or systemic corticosteroids in the prior 1 month. The protocol was approved by the Minneapolis VA IRB (#4348-B) and in accordance of the Declaration of Helsinki.
