    The 2024 Summer Paralympic Games kicked off today in Paris. Of the 225 athletes who will compete for Team USA, ten are from Texas. And five of those are from Houston or the surrounding area. The Paralympics originally grew out of a British hospital for World War II veterans in 1948 and feature athletes with disabilities. And some of those athletes compete with the assistance of guides, like the kind that work with a local organization called Eye Can Alliance.

    Nearly a month after that devastating derecho, a number of downtown Houston streets and sidewalks are still closed to repair damaged buildings. At least eight people died during that May 16th storm. Downtown windows in several high-rises shattered, among other storm debris that's still, in some cases, being replaced. Despite that, there have been longstanding efforts to engage Houstonians in visiting downtown to shop, dine, and take in entertainment. But like anything, it could be better.

    For 25 years, Musicians on Call has brought live and recorded music to the bedsides of patients, families, and caregivers. One month ago today, the program expanded into The Woman's Hospital of Texas through HCA Healthcare. Doctors and nurses gathered in a teaching room at the Texas Medical Center hospital, where they were treated to a short performance by musician Lain Gray, before he walked to patients’ rooms to perform.
