A study released in August by Deloitte found that the average mortgage interest rate in Poland is 8.06%. By comparison, homeowners in Croatia, Slovenia, and Slovakia, all eurozone members, are paying under 4%. The cash for mortgage subsidies earmarked in the 2025 budget for first-time buyers will now be redirected to areas devastated by Storm Boris, leaving the housing sector without the expected stimulus.

Moldovans headed to the polls on Oct. 20 to elect their next head of state and vote on the future of the country’s European Union integration. With over 98% of the votes counted on Monday, the “yes” vote edged ahead at 50.03%, while the “no” camp, which had maintained a lead since the counting began, stood at 49.97%, according to results from the election commission.

Several areas in Romania, Poland and the Czech Republic were hit hard over the weekend as heavy rain and surging water levels forced evacuations, collapsed bridges and damaged houses and cars. The number of flood victims in southwestern Poland rose to five after the body of a surgeon returning from hospital duty was found in the town of Nysa on Monday morning, firefighters said. Earlier the bodies of two women and two men were found in the region.

More rainfall is expected in the coming days with surging river levels putting authorities on high alert. Tens of thousands of homes have been damaged so far in Romania, where four died by Saturday, and in the Czech Republic, where thousands were evacuated across the border. On Sunday, one person was found to have drowned in southwest Poland and a firefighter tackling flooding in Austria also died.
