English language learners will make up more than a quarter of Newark’s Public School enrollment this school year, an increase over last year that points to a growing need for more teachers and services. District leaders said they anticipated a higher number of English language learners this year and in February, announced the launch of a new bilingual program in the city’s South Ward to address the rising need.

Newark Public Schools students will have longer days this year under a new universal schedule that guarantees a lunch break and transition time for teachers. All district students are expected to arrive at school at 8:15 a.m. and will be dismissed at 3:05 p.m., according to the new schedule posted on the district’s website. Last year, the school day ran from 8:25 a.m. to 2:55 p.m. for elementary school students and from 8:15 a.m. to 2:40 p.m. for high school students.

Nearly two years after allegations of racial harassment at the Newark School of Global Studies first surfaced, two lawsuits demanding the release of a report analyzing the cultural dynamics at the school are scheduled to be heard in court. A hearing for the case over the release of the Creed Strategies contract with the district, the firm that conducted the report, and billing records is scheduled for Aug. 20, according to court records online.
