Dark blue contrasted by white—the royal blue dress my husband bought me to feel like a Shabbat queen; white flakes of ash falling like snow on my dress. We sit in the late afternoon sun in Tzfat, forest fires burning all around us. My forests. The forests I hike to, prayer book in hand, to pray amongst the tall trees. Burning. We don’t budge. This is what we do on Shabbat afternoons, and we aren’t going to let Hezbollah ruin our plans. Not today, not ever. It smells toasty.

Beshalach in a NutshellThe name of the Parshah, "Beshalach," means "When he sent" and it is found in Exodus 13:17. Soon after allowing the children of Israel to depart from Egypt, Pharaoh chases after them to force their return, and the Israelites find themselves trapped between Pharaoh’s armies and the sea. G‑d tells Moses to raise his staff over the water; the sea splits to allow the Israelites to pass through, and then closes over the pursuing Egyptians.

I want to be known for the real me. Not the stage me. Not the speaker me. Not the writer me. Not the actress me. Not the inspiring me. Not the funny me. Not the Instagram me. Not the personality me. The real me. My core. My Divine essence. The me who transcends all reams of personality, who is not limited to anything I ever said, did or made. Where does this innate desire stem from? G‑d wants me to know Him beyond being the Creator of the world. That is what we gain on Shabbat, the day of rest.

With G‑d’s epic kindnesses and the pure generosity of my in-laws, my husband and I are building an apartment in Safed. There are moments when we get to peel back the curtain of consciousness and gain a rare glimpse of G‑d’s perspective of creation. For G‑d, there is no us and Him. No big G‑d and no small world. G‑d sees us as part of Him, not as a separate creation. But because we live behind the veil of construed reality, we spend most of our time identifying as separate from G‑d. And then comes Sukkot. Sukkot is a week of realizing that the active relationship I crave with G‑d is always here.

My Hebrew birthday is Rosh Chodesh Elul. During the month of Elul, every Jew should feel and know that G‑d is their best friend. The acronym for Elul is Ani l’dodi, v’dodi li, “I am my beloved’s, and my beloved is mine.” It is the mode of being where I get to be G‑d’s bride, G‑d’s love. And G‑d is my love. Before I knew about my Hebrew birthday or or much of the meaning of Jewish concepts, I grew up on an organic farm in Canada. Every fall, we would plant garlic.

When do I feel like praying? Usually, after I pray. I don’t wake up in the morning with birds above my head, feeling the sun on my face and singing to my Creator. Instead, I wake up unsure if I would rather return to an unconscious state or if I am ready to re-enter the world of consciousness. After a pre-scheduled snooze or two, I bravely tip-toe into “reality” … or at least my version of it. I then stare at this thing called my siddur. Do I want to go there?

My husband was on his way home from prayers, and then the two of us and some friends were all meant to pile promptly into the car and head out for the weekend. Except 20 minutes after our scheduled time to leave, Ariel still wasn’t home. I fumed. “Do you know that everyone is waiting for you?” I said sharply when he walked in the door. His shoulders deflated. He put the packages down. I hadn’t even noticed them. He wasn’t late because he was dawdling; he had been picking things up for the house.
