    Starting in the 2026-27 school year, Pennsylvania will require all high school students to take a financial literacy class in order to graduate. In 2021, only 14 high schools in Philadelphia were providing financial literacy education. One organization that is helping local high schools prepare for the mandate is Philadelphia Financial Scholars, also called PFS.

    Over the last several years, Furness High School has seen an increase in its student enrollment. In 2023, the comprehensive neighborhood high school had an estimated 780 students. This school year, the school has nearly 900 students. Furness Principal Daniel Peou attributed the growth in student enrollment to the school’s family-like environment. “We welcome everyone with an open arm,” Peou said. “We not only care about our students educational wise, but we care about their overall wellbeing.

    More than 100 high school students participated in the Philadelphia Financial Scholars Teen Investors Summit last month. During the event, students were able to network with industry leaders, receive portfolio guidance and participate in interactive workshops. The summit, which was held on March 14 at FS Investments headquarters, was the kickoff event to an eight-week investing-focused enrichment program.

    With 1,200 students, the Louis H. Farrell School at 8300 Castor Ave., is filled with adventures and dreams. It’s a diverse place that educates quick-witted students — some are learning English and others are being introduced to the education system for the first time. At the center of the K-8 school are staff who are not only making sure students are learning academics, but are also growing as people. “We’re one of the most diverse schools in Philadelphia,” said Farrell Principal Peter Jepsen.

    S. Weir Mitchell Elementary School hosted a literacy event for the Scholastic United States Readers program last month. The program currently provides book access to nearly 800 Pre-K-eighth grade students attending Mitchell and G.W. Childs Elementary Schools in Philadelphia. There are plans to expand the initiative to other Title I schools in Pennsylvania in the coming weeks. The move comes after the program launched at five Title I schools in Massachusetts last October.
