“You only get 18 summers with your children,” we hear this time and time again as a reminder to cherish the wonder that these memories bring. Memorial Day weekend always marks the beginning of our summer memories. Kids are giddy as the end of another school year ends and we begin our summer bucket lists with anticipation of all that the season will bring. For us, that means popsicles, pool parties, and the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Looking back at my life, I often think of how privileged I was for opportunities to work with many different backgrounds. Working primarily in fashion and entertainment in my early days, I quickly had to learn different accents and languages because our beautiful world of fashion is also very diverse. I loved that about my work and when I had my children, I knew I wanted to instill that same acceptance and open mind into them.

Traveling into the city of Pittsburgh with kids from the South Hills has become a road trip I never thought would be a road trip. So many years of my twenties were spent living, working, and moving through the city. It was second nature. Now, ‘suburban mom takes the kids into the city’ is an entire vacation. Though, there is something about spending the holidays in the city that is truly magical. The lights, the trees, the tall buildings decorated with wreaths.

In browsing Diwali events in Pittsburgh, I noticed a shortage in the acknowledgment of the celebration. I know my neighborhood of Upper St. Clair is very rich in South Asian and Indian cultures, and I always love the vibrancy and beauty of the culture. That said, we will make it our job to seek inclusivity and see the celebration more acknowledged in Pittsburgh and the South Hills. Thankfully, Diwali just recently became a Pennsylvania State Holiday after Governor Sharpiro passed a new law.
