    May 29—MORRISON — A Sterling man has been sentenced to prison after admitting he set fire to his Sterling apartment last fall as officers arrived at his address to investigate an aggravated battery call. Alan G. Marshall, 48, pleaded guilty Wednesday, May 28, to aggravated arson as part of a plea deal in connection with a Sept. 25 fire in the 600 block of West Fifth Street.

    MORRISON – A Rock Falls man who served prison time for a murder in Cook County and who is now out on parole for a 2018 drug conviction that landed him a 12-year prison sentence has once again been charged with drug offenses in Whiteside County. John Trumbla, 56, appeared Tuesday, May 27, in Whiteside County Circuit Court on five drug charges – one of them a Class X felony accusing him of delivering cocaine during school hours within 500 feet of Merrill School.

    May 28—Dixon's Tom Wadsworth has been selected this year's Scripps National Spelling Bee National Volunteer of the Year in recognition of his 43 years as the pronouncer for the Sauk Valley area's spelling bee. The award was announced Monday, May 26, during opening ceremonies in Washington. Wadsworth, 72, first became the pronouncer for the Lee County Spelling Bee in 1983 when he was the morning personality at WSDR radio in Sterling.
