The petrochemical plant has been accused of disproportionately affecting Louisiana’s majority-Black St. John Parish with environmental hazards. Children there suffer from significantly high rates of asthma and adults face alarming rates of cancer, 50 times higher than the national average (1,500 per million people), according to federal regulators.
