A state House committee on Wednesday will review a bill inspired by fallen Raleigh police officer Gabriel Torres, who died in the 2022 Hedingham shooting. Torres, 29, who lived in the Hedingham neighborhood, was on his way to work in his personal vehicle when he was shot on Oct. 13, 2022. He was one of five people who died when a 15-year-old gunman opened fire. North Carolina law does not currently extend death benefits to law enforcement officers on their way to or from work.
