The presidential and vice-presidential debates have come and gone, and one glaring issue was absent from the conversation: education. Not a single candidate stood on stage and meaningfully addressed how we’re preparing the next generation. The stakes couldn’t be higher, but education—one of the most critical aspects of our society—is left in the margins, as if it doesn’t affect every other issue.

Build a plan with solid, attainable, and time-bound goals you want from the “system.”Build, rebuild, or reinforce your village. Utilize local nonprofits, find mentors, and extract wisdom from your elders. Take advantage of free city/town resources like libraries, museums, parks, and the like.

I run an organization called Energy Convertors. In that org, we train student fellows and parents to utilize their sense of agency to get the education they deserve. Once we accomplish that, our student fellows define local education issues, conduct scientific research, and then write a report that builds the agency of their whole community to improve education where they live. One such issue when training our fellows is the discernment between grades and proficiency.
