    Fall is such a great time of year, in large part because there are excellent meetings, such as the Center For Innovation’s (CFI) annual conference, where I get to meet with passionate visionaries, leaders, and advocates in long-term care and senior living — the ones I fondly consider “The Crazies.” These are the people who are truly innovating in the industry, taking measured risks on a financial and regulatory level. They have a remarkable track record and are true trailblazers.

    Caring for people living with dementia has always required balancing safety and autonomy: We often want autonomy for ourselves but safety for others; and that has historically prevailed in senior living and long-term care. We have come a long way toward treating these individuals with dignity and respect while prioritizing their safety. Yet, with the population aging and more people facing cognitive decline and dementia, there is still a need to focus on freedom from restraints.
