    One of the elements of understanding the artist Katherine Porter was tracking her many moves and motivations. It’s the kind of personal detail that is left out of the writing of critics and most art historians. As an artist and friend Kathy was layered, mercurial and complex. It was the frentic edge that informed the work and defined her concerns for equity and social justice. Part of that was reflected by a constant search for a supportive community.

    The modernist Umberto Romano (1906-1982) is the subject of a retrospective, curated by Martha Oaks, at the annex of the Cape Ann museum through December 29, 2024. The main museum is closed for renovation. The exhibition is free to the public in the 12,000 square foot Janet & William Ellery James Center, which was completed in 2020. It includes 2,000 square feet of flexible exhibition and community programming space.

    “ELLIPTICALS” is a solo show of recent en plein air landscape paintings by Alvin Ouellet at IMAGES CINEMA in Williamstown, MA from December 2nd through December 31st, 2024. Alvin Ouellet is an artist based in Adams, MA. His recent works were created and are on display at various locations throughout the Berkshires. Now retired from Mass College of Art he relocated to the Berkshires. Since then he has taken full advantage of depicting cityscapes.

    We viewed the stunning 2017 retrospective “Salvatore Del Deo: A Storied History” at the Cape Cod Museum of Art in Dennis. In 2023, then 95, he was the subject of national news when there was an attempt to evict the renowned artist and chef from his historic summer Provincetown dune shack. In the 1980s I first interviewed Sal who, with Ciro Cozzi (1921-2013), started a sandwich shop which expanded into the most renowned of Provincetown’s many storied restaurants, the still running Ciro and Sal’s.
