In the grand old days of the English country house, before the First World War, Althorp hosted a Christmas Servants’ Ball. Meanwhile my forefathers and their guests skated on Althorp’s Round Oval Lake. An elegant, canopied, carriage for four built on the chassis of a giant sledge shuttled guests arriving by rail through the snow from Althorp Station to the big house. Things were very different by the time my father moved in with us four children, on the death of my grandfather, in 1975.
