It seems winter is finally over and we’re seeing some warmer weather. Winter is great and all, but it’s time to get outdoors. Sometime last week on social media, I saw a post on the late actor, Christopher Lee. Lee is one of my favorite actors: in addition to his well known roles as Count Dooku in Star Wars and Saruman in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, he led a very interesting life.

In the wake of the 2024 general election, South Dakota has seen some of its politicians sent to prominent positions. Senator John Thune won a bid to become the Senate Republicans next leader, replacing Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky. “I wasn’t surprised by that at all,” said political science professor Julia Hellwege.

Next week is my favorite week of the entire year. Why, you may ask. Because Thanksgiving is the best holiday of the year. I understand that there are some Christmas fanatics that I may offend by saying this. Certainly Thanksgiving does not have the same lead up and month-long season like Christmas does. Don’t get me wrong, I like Christmas, but as I grow a bit older every year, Christmas loses a bit of its magic.

Through the end of the year, students, faculty and community members can visit a unique and rare collection of keyboard instruments at the National Music Museum. Home to over 15,000 instruments, the National Music Museum holds one of the largest instrument collections in the entire nation. Darryl Martin, conservator of the National Music Museum, believes the collection is special.

With unusually warm temperatures for the 110th Dakota Days, arrests were unusually low compared to previous years. From Thursday evening to Sunday morning, the Vermillion Police Department booked 26 individuals into jail. Most were released within two hours. According to Clay County Sheriff Andy Howe, there were 55 charges against those 26 individuals arrested. Howe says that the historic arrests during D-Days weekend has been in the 50-70 range.

South Dakota has a near record number of ballot propositions this year: seven in total. There are four constitutional amendments, two initiated measures and a referred law. Spanning three pages, some voters may feel fatigued after reading every question and unsure how to vote. Here is the rundown of each issue. A constitutional amendment changes the South Dakota Constitution permanently. The legislature cannot undo a constitutional amendment, but voters may vote to undo an amendment in future years.

With unusually warm October temperatures, the 110th annual celebration known as D-Days is well underway at USD. Tuesday morning, students gathered in the MUC for free bagels from Einstein’s and mocktails made from Bubblr and fruit juice. With some jazz music in the background at nine in the morning, the Rise N Dine was unusually tranquil for D-Days standards. Dakota Days Executive Team Co-President Libby Brust enjoys seeing the people this week.

After a six-month incarceration, former USD basketball player Mihai Carcoana was deported on Oct. 3. Clay County Sheriff Andy Howe says this is the first time during his tenure an inmate was deported immediately after a sentence. “We’ve never had in my history a person here on state charges that then was released to be deported,” Howe said. Deportations are carried out by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Unlike many colleges across the country, USD continues to see strong enrollment numbers. In particular, one demographic of students has far outpaced everyone else: international students. According to Gallagher International Center Director Patrick Morrison, there are currently 764 international students from 71 countries studying at USD. Roughly half (378) are graduate students while 364 are undergraduates with 22 exchange students.
