I landed in Salt Lake City with my size ten ski boots miraculously crammed into my roller bag and low expectations. Yes, I knew the state had a literal trademark on “the greatest snow on earth.” Yes, I knew that any one of the dozens of mountains crowding out the horizon dwarfed any I could access back on in the northeast. But I also knew that ski conditions are always a gamble and that on an increasingly warming planet, the odds are rarely in your favor.
