A bounce-back game in Dallas was vintage Sounders from previous successful seasons: an early opportunistic finish off of forward pressure, and a shut-down defense to hold on for the win. The final was 1-0, and while Seattle never completely dominated, they looked more likely to score for much of the match. The bending-but-not-breaking effort ceded possession to Dallas, but limited them to few quality opportunities.

There are high expectations for the Sounders in 2025, and watching some inspired play earlier in the year, it was logical to expect Seattle to go toe-to-toe with anyone in the league, especially at home. So when the struggling Houston Dynamo, with their dismal record in Seattle, came to town last weekend, you expected the Sounders to dominate the ball and the game. They did that for the most part everywhere, except on the scoreboard.

The Seattle Sounders slipped up (literally) in St. Louis and it cost them a chance at points. Following a midweek loss in Mexico and a fresh batch of long-term injuries, Seattle fielded a rotated lineup that struggled to create dangerous chances. Going to RSL and getting your hopes up, no matter the state of their team, is a fool’s errand, and boy was I foolish. Seattle has had no success on the road in Utah, and last weekend was more of the same. It may have looked different, with the Sounders having a stronger lineup and form on paper, winning the all-important xG battle, or even presenting as the better team for long stretches. But in the end, it’s on the road in a place where the Sounders don’t win, and they didn’t.

Seattle’s final match of the season was a true microcosm of 2024. Before the season, most MLS writers had the Sounders finishing first in the West, but the team started the season woefully flat. Despite being counted out over and over again, their team depth, league-best defense, resilient spirit and some opportunistic offense combined to help them turn it around. Amazingly, the Sounders again found themselves in a Western Conference Championship match.
