As the final strains of “God Save the King” faded from Royal Ascot on Saturday, and the last pair of high heels teetered out of the Royal Enclosure, I decided to travel 340 miles north… to another racecourse, this time Hexham! While Royal Ascot dazzles the world with its five-day parade of high fashion, champagne flutes, and horses worth more than your house, it is Hexham Racecourse that Queen Camilla described as “the most beautiful” during a visit earlier this month.

There was disappointment for The King and Queen on Saturday – even before the racing began – after it was revealed that their final runner of the week had been withdrawn. The aptly named The King’s Falcon was due to run in the Golden Gates States on the final day of the royal meeting, with prize money available of £110,000. However, it has been confirmed that the three-year-old bay gelding will no longer take his chance after a ‘bad scope’.

Amid the pomp, pageantry and precision of Royal Ascot 2025, this year’s meeting offered more than just thrilling finishes and standout fashion. It also saw the formal debut of two royal romances. The most eye-catching of these involved Peter Phillips, the late Queen Elizabeth II’s eldest grandchild, who chose the royal meeting to appear publicly with his partner, Harriet Sperling. The pair had been linked for some time, but this marks their most high-profile outing to date.

Family dog Orla – a cocker spaniel – is understood to have given birth to a litter of four puppies a few weeks ago.

In the long and storied history of Royal Ascot, few moments shine as brightly as that summer afternoon in 2013 when Queen Elizabeth II became the first reigning monarch to win the prestigious Gold Cup. The royal colours – purple, gold and scarlet -have graced many winners’ enclosures over the decades. But this was different. This was unscripted history. Estimate, a bay filly bred by the late Aga Khan, was gifted to The Queen by His Highness in 2010 as an 80th birthday present.

I had the most enjoyable day shadowing @SimonHolt3 at Brighton y’day ahead of Royal Ascot next week. It was so kind of him to let me see the work that goes in to the art of calling races - I’m very grateful. I’m tempted to learn colours for a race tomorrow and give it a go! https://t.co/AE7kRcfoOb
