A Cambridge student graduating on Saturday (03/05) interrupted the ceremony to protest the University’s “complicity” in “genocide in Gaza,” breaking the four-month High Court injunction against protests in Senate House. The student, wearing full sub fusc academic dress, proceeded to the centre of the Senate House room and held up a Palestinian flag, before making a speech. Female academics at the University of Cambridge are now paid 13.2% less on average than their male counterparts, with the gender pay gap returning to its highest level in 2024 since 2019. According to the University’s annual Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) report, the median gender pay gap among central University academics went up by almost 3% in 2024 from 10.4% in 2023.

Campaigning has begun for next month’s local elections, in which two students and five staff members at the University of Cambridge are standing. The two students running in the Cambridgeshire County Council election on May 1 are both members of the Green Party. Among the staff members, three are Labour members and two are Greens. The County Council elections take place every four years, unlike the City Council elections, which occur three out of every four years.

Cambridge students' use of ChatGPT has increased by 14% since 2023, with over 60% of students admitting to have used the AI chatbot to assist with university work in a new survey. A Varsity survey found that 61.3% of Cambridge students had used AI tools to assist with academic work .The survey, which received over 330 responses from Cambridge students, also found that 29.7% of students have used the artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot to help with assessed work, such as coursework or exams.
