Half of newborn babies who died at Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital Trust between 2021 and 2022 had been given 'poor' or 'very poor' care after being admitted. That was the conclusion of yet another damning report into the state of maternity services in the Midlands. The paper was commissioned by the Trust and carried out by the Royal College of Physicians - and it found that while there were some examples of good or excellent care, too many were still not meeting that standard.

Tackling river pollution is a “top priority”, the new Environment Secretary has said - promising to push ahead with plans for criminal charges against water company bosses who fail to stop sewage being dumped in UK waterways, and a ban on multi-million pound bonuses. Still only three weeks into his new position heading up the Department for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs (Defra), Steve Reed told ITV News Central that he’s determined to clean up the country’s rivers.

Environment Correspondent Charlotte Cross reports on the flood-ravaged communities along the England-Wales border Flood-ravaged communities along the River Severn have slammed a cross-border scheme between English and Welsh authorities for moving too slowly as water levels surge following heavy rain in the region. The Severn Valley Flood Management Scheme involves government agencies and councils on both sides of the border, and was launched at the end of 2020.

A newborn baby girl died as result of neglect by staff at Shrewsbury & Telford Hospital Trust - despite an independent report ordering urgent improvements being published four months beforehand. Senior Coroner John Ellery today published his findings following an inquest into Poppy Russell, who was born and then died at the Princess Royal in Telford on April 11th, 2021. He found that she died due to asphyxiation, contributed to by neglect.
