Shortly after noon on Thursday, the staff at Vanity Fair received an email from Condé Nast's Anna Wintour inviting them to a meeting with editor-in-chief Radhika Jones. To the surprise of almost everyone, including most of the magazine's senior-most editors, a visibly emotional Wintour announced that Jones would be stepping down after seven years at the post. As Wintour spoke for a few minutes about Jones's accomplishments, she was seemingly on the verge of tears, according to two sources present.

Jim Acosta, the frequent Donald Trump antagonist who was all but pushed out by CNN earlier this year, may not be the type of person you'd suspect would be a hit on Substack. In fact, when he signed off from his CNN show for the final time at the end of January, he barely knew what it was. "I thought Substack was a place where people posted their articles and opinion pieces," he said. He could be forgiven for his mistake.

If you were to start a media organization in 2025, probably the last thing it would be is a cable-news network. Younger audiences are fleeing television, making cable news a decidedly geriatric business. Earlier this year, CNN said it would eliminate about 200 jobs in its traditional TV operations while adding around the same number for digital positions. And yet building a cable-news channel from the ground up is basically what MSNBC is about to do.
