I had the great fortune to perform in one of the loveliest cities in upstate New York: Hudson— a city in the county seat of Columbia. I performed at Backbar, a beautiful venue that serves fusion food, and it was the perfect setting for my music, featuring Southeast Asian inspired bites. The owner of Backbar, Niki Porter and her husband (a designer), had prepared the lounge and performance venue beautifully for the band’s arrival.

I remember my first time performing at the Royal Opera House in Mumbai: last year, with Joe Lastie from Preservation Hall. It was Joe’s first time in India too, and he wowed the crowds. The air had so much energy that it felt like someone had struck a match and lit up jazz. This time, the energy was there, but the sentiment was different. More warm and fuzzy, like a cashmere sweater and a nice glass of Champagne. It was Valentine’s Day, after all.

At Preservation Hall in New Orleans, the jazz is in your face: drums rat-a-tatting just a few feet from your pewlike seat, sweat beading on your brow. It’s hot in there — literally (the six-decade-old club only got air-conditioning a few years ago) and figuratively. In New York, Jazz at Lincoln Center is a temple to music, where the space (overlooking Columbus Circle), the sound, and the listeners alike are cultivated and ornate.

The day before our show, the flooding in Mumbai was quite massive. My mom chided me over the phone, “remember never to tour again during monsoon season”—and she was right.
