There were a few indications ahead of the bombing that the U.S. was moving forward with airstrikes. Earlier Saturday, a series of B-2 bombers, which is the only aircraft in the U.S. arsenal which can carry the massive MOP bunker-busting bomb, were tracked leaving the U.S. and heading for the Pacific Ocean, along with mid-air refueling planes. Multiple B-2 bombers reportedly carried out the airstrikes on Iran's nuclear sites.

It's Donald Trump's birthday, and while tonight's controversial military parade in Washington, D.C. is officially a celebration of the U.S. Army's 250th anniversary, it's also a big birthday present for Trump - who has long fantasized about presiding over such an event. It also coincides with nationwide "No Kings Day" protests against Trump, his administration, and his ongoing crackdown on migrants, which has become a major national focus following anti-ICE protests in Los Angeles.

Sometime before 2 a.m. local time Saturday, a gunman targeted two Minnesota lawmakers and their spouses in their homes in the Minneapolis suburbs. State representative (and former Speaker) Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, were killed. State Senator John Hoffman and his spouse were also shot and wounded in a separate attack.

Iran can and likely will reconstitute its program and might be incentivized to covertly develop nuclear weapons. And the assault could unify Iranians around what had otherwise been an unpopular regime. A long-time writer for the Stimson Center in Tehran, who must go unnamed for reasons of personal security, wrote to me this morning:"What is important right now is that the schisms within Iranian politics have disappeared already.
