It didn’t look like my kind of movie. Luckily through word of mouth and a timely blu-ray release, I decided on a rare blind buy and bought it without ever having seen it. I don’t normally do that.

He creates electric dialogue, morally ambiguous characters and seems to really thrive in seedy underworlds where violence is as much of a currency as cash and in that sense his characters are always either rich or hopelessly poor and trying to remedy it through questionable means.

He could continue making action movies, and everyone would eat it up. Instead he branched out to another genre that could utilize his propensity for carnage and that was horror. He gave us the underrated religious, body horror, Apostle, starring the up and coming, Dan Stevens.

“The history of a people are found in its songs.” - George JellinekA heist movie is usually exactly that. A slasher, same thing. These movies can be thoroughly entertaining. They can even achieve pop culture permanence. It’s all dependent on the people that create them. However, every once in a while a movie will come along that promises complexities. It swears to deliver nuance and originality.

Sonic the Hedgehog got an entire trilogy in four years. There’s four Despicable Me movies. Hell, the damn Minions got a sequel. There’s a Pitch Perfect franchise. I’m just making myself angry at this point but I’m going to continue just for a moment and I’ll move on. Dredd demanded a sequel; nothing.
