“Whenever I date a guy, I think, is this the man I want my children to spend their weekends with?”- Rita RudnerFrom time to time, a new voice will enter the arena of cinematic storytelling and will debut with an immediate hit. Writer and director Celine Song is one of those fresh voices with her gorgeous freshmen release, A24’s Past Lives. So much of that film is about the silences between our words. “It is not in the stars to hold our destiny but in ourselves.”- William Shakespeare(If you like drinking games, while reading this review, take a shot every time I mention “live-action” or “live-action remakes.”) It would seem that DreamWorks has come down with a case of live-action remake syndrome that could have only come from one place (Disney, I’m looking at you). "I was taught to shoot the messenger too. Somebody playing both sides of the fence is more dangerous than your enemy."- FabolousGuy Ritchie has a very unique style but it’s undeniably entertaining. He creates electric dialogue, morally ambiguous characters and seems to really thrive in seedy underworlds where violence is as much of a currency as cash and in that sense his characters are always either rich or hopelessly poor and trying to remedy it through questionable means.
