The number of Australian consumers feeling “very highly” stressed has crept up amid growing concern over the ability to fund retirement, which has risen to a seven-year high. National Australia Bank on Thursday revealed its consumer stress index rose to an 18-month high in the March quarter, with inflation continuing to add to already high living costs. Around three in 10 Australians reported “very high” cost of living stress, rising to more than 40 per cent among those in the lowest income group.

Popular footwear brand Wittner, which was founded over a century ago, has collapsed into administration amid a challenging operating environment for retailers. Wittner is the latest retailer to succumb to a pullback in discretionary spending, with Deloitte restructuring partners Sal Algeri and David Orr appointed as administrators on Wednesday. Mr Algeri said trading would continue as they worked towards a successful sale or recapitalisation of the business.

Shares in Bank of Queensland have jumped despite the mid-tier lender warning it expects the number of bad loans to rise amid economic uncertainty. The Warwick Negus-chaired group, which also owns digital brand ME Bank, on Wednesday reported its total income in the six months to the end of February hit $793 million, slightly down from the $795m recorded a year ago. Post-tax cash earnings lifted 6 per cent to $183m, driven by improved margins, lower costs and subdued credit losses.

Scandal-plagued billionaire Richard White has been named WiseTech’s chief innovation officer in addition to his role as chair in a move that tightens his grip on the $28 billion software logistics giant. WiseTech on Wednesday announced it had entered into a new 10-year employment agreement with Mr White, who will keep his $1 million pay he has received per year since 2015.
