The annual Drake Relays have already begun, but for high school fans, the real action begins Thursday. Area athletes from Creston, Lenox and Mount Ayr punched their ticket to the exclusive event — one that forgoes classes and simply focuses on the best athletes in the state. Creston senior Brayden Schoon and sophomore Tom Mikkelsen each qualified in a throwing event. This is the first time in a decade the Panthers will have boys events competing.

It was not track-friendly weather Monday as the Creston hosted the Panther Invitational. While the girls came away with a resounding meet win, the boys narrowly fell to Mount Ayr. The Raiders scored 58 to the Panthers’ 52. BoysThe Panther boys still managed to put together a good performance, winning eight gold medals. Senior Brayden Schoon and sophomore Tom Mikkelsen continued their throwing dominance, taking silver and gold in both events.

Though the image is drastic, park operators are working to restore the natural balance of the land. Thursday and Friday the Panther boys tennis team fell in duals to Atlantic and Audubon. AtlanticCreston (0-2) hosted the Trojans (1-1) Thursday, finding one singles win to lose the dual 8-1. Creston junior Carson Beer (No. 6) was the only Panther to come away with a win, defeating Atlantic freshman Koen Juhl 8-1. Several Panthers fought in close matches but ultimately fell to their opponent. Creston’s No. 1, senior Spencer Brown, lost in an 8-5 bout with Atlantic senior Kinnick Juhl.

Apr. 11—OMAHA, Neb. — After freshman Nate Bentley finished his 100-meter leg of the sprint medley relay, he passed the baton to teammate Seth Gordon, took three steps and collapsed on the track in lane eight. "He went down face first and was just laying on his stomach on the track not moving," Bentley's mom Erin Wallace said. The meet was originally scheduled for Monday but had been postponed to Tuesday due to weather. With her work schedule already set, Wallace wasn't able to go to the makeup date.

Apr. 10—ATLANTIC — A man who formerly resided in Creston was charged April 4 with murder in the first degree and child endangerment, stemming from a January incident. Corbin M. Loudermilk, 25, of Atlantic, is being held in Cass County on a $1 million bond. According to a Cass County report, Loudermilk and his 3-week old baby's mother were at their home on Maple Street in Atlantic with their baby and Loudermilk's mother the morning of Jan. 4.

With the full roster on the field, the Creston/Nodaway Valley girls soccer team was able to put together their first win of the season Tuesday against Chariton (1-1-1). It was a defensive 1-0 win, Nodaway Valley senior Lillie Strode scoring the only goal of the game with five minutes left in the first half. She was assisted by Creston senior Alyssa Gerdes. Though the Panthers (1-3-1) goal came in the first half, co-head coach Bill Ralston said they came out a little flat before halftime.
