Having reached that grow-or-stagnate point of their musical career, bdrmm have decided to grow. Not that there wasn’t a clearly readable upwards trajectory in the previous works the Hull-based indie-rockers have produced, but even from the first couple tracks their new full-length effort, Microtonic, can’t help but feel like a full-blown upgrade.

Even so, the core kernel of what Bishopskin is about remains, that deep, almost ancestral summoning of a visceral form of spirituality. “Like a form of speaking in tongues, but not the kind you see in evangelical churches,” Tati agrees: music as universal language. It feels less isolated, too, now that a wave of folk-punk, inspired by that same old spirituality, is sweeping through the UK alternative music scene.

When it comes to Warmdüscher releasing new music, it is always a good idea to factor in an element of surprise. Over their by now well-established career they have consistently demonstrated a positive glee in indulging ideas which on paper may seem out of left field and making them work; this most recent record of theirs, Too Cold To Hold is in a sense a manifestation of what happens when you elevate that same process to a greater power.
