Global greenhouse gas emissions remain dangerously high, and this year set records for both heat and atmospheric carbon dioxide levels, with CO2 concentration rising by an unprecedented 3.4 parts per million, an 86% increase over the previous year’s growth rate, marking the highest rise in recorded history.

Lahaina was an unmitigated tragedy. Lives lost, buildings destroyed, and an entire town devastated. But the community of people, the relationships and the culture of deep aloha arose from the danger and quickly built a network of care and safety for one another. Noble and compassionate acts of community support were widespread. Beach parks became landing zones for boats bringing critical supplies from other locations.

Lāhainā, a tight-knit West Maui coastal community, holds a rich history encompassing its origins as a royal capital, its transformation into a whaling port, a center of plantation economy, and its recent status as a busy tourist destination. Front Street, lined with historic buildings and charming storefronts, was a focal point for visitors and residents alike. These are now in ashes.

Congratulations to Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi, City Council Vice Chair Esther Kia‘aina, and the entire City Council for approving and signing into law Bills 41 and 42. These bills reaffirm the city’s commitment to safely adapt to sea level rise by thoughtfully planning, permitting and developing Oahu’s coastal communities while conserving public beaches. Oahu now joins Maui and Kauai counties in using place-based historic erosion data to determine shoreline setbacks.
