President Donald Trump’s imperative to kickstart domestic energy production—namely oil and gas—combined with cutbacks in federal programming and staff, have introduced uncertainty in an industry that was previously soaring. A futuristic solar-powered vehicle made by a startup called Aptera just took a long road trip, powered by the sun. And one of Aptera’s executives was at the wheel. Steve Fambro, Aptera’s co-founder and co-CEO, took a more than 300-mile trip in the company’s signature solar-powered three-wheeled EV. He drove the sleek vehicle from Flagstaff, Arizona all the way to Imperial Valley, California on a single charge, thanks to solar panels installed in its roof, hood, and hatch.

SpaceX is facing competition in the national security launch space. Rocket Lab and startup Stoke Space were among five companies selected by the U.S. Space Force Space Systems Command to compete for a $5.6 billion Department of Defense contract. SpaceX, Blue Origin, and United Launch Alliance were selected to participate last June. Both Rocket Lab and Stoke Space were given $5 million to demonstrate the capabilities of their respective rockets and develop an approach to tailored mission assurance.

Buzzy EV-maker Rivian just spun a secret team of in-house innovators into a brand new company with a focus on micromobility. Called Also, the startup brought in $105 million in funding from Eclipse Ventures to tackle electrified travel in smaller form factors. Also president Chris Yu, formerly the VP of future programs at Rivian, says the company aims to apply the Rivian handbook of combining strong customer insights, cutting-edge design and vertically integrated technology to smaller vehicles.
